The Vision...
The Domestic Violence Center Phase IV Supportive Housing
Program will provde housing and supportive services to survivors of domestic
violence (with at least two children living in the same household).
The Program will serve 13 families at a time.
The Center will construct 13 townhouse units.
Units will be owned and operated by the Domestic Violence
Center.
The Domestic Violence Center will provide case management, promote
linkages to other community resources and otherwise support program
participants.
A day care center will be constructed for the use of Phase
IV participants
and other community members. It will be owned and operated by the
Domestic Violence Center.
The Phase IV project is modeled on a similar project, Emma Lazarus
House (Berks County) which has been operating successfully since
1998.
The Need...
In a recent state-wide survey of formerly battered women, 93%
of those responding ranked housing as their most pressing need. (Source:
Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence)
To often, survivors of abuse face a life-threatening dilemma: remain
with the abuser, or become homeless.
Many survivors of domestic abuse face difficulties obtaining a lease
and establishing credit.
Housing which is affordable, in good condition and located convenient
to work, transportation and child care is often impossible to find.
Chester County's well-documented lack of affordable housing compounds
these problems.
Our current transitional housing programs are of relatively short
duration.
How Phase IV will help...
- It will provide community-based housing for survivors and their
children.
- Support Services will be available on-site (These will
include: case management, life-skills development, support groups,
counseling,
children's services, legal services)
- It will be stable.
- Participants will be able to save money toward
future goals.
- Day care will be available.
The Challenge...
The estimated cost of the Phase IV project is $2 million.
Invest in the power of families to break the cycle of violence and
build self-sufficient lives.
